Alinah Segobye is Woman of the Year |
University of Botswana archaeologist, Dr Alinah Segobye, has been given the award of "Woman of the Year, 2001" by the American Biographical Institute for her contributions to archaeology and education in Africa.
Alinah Segobye began life in Mochudi, but was educated in Gaborone at Camp Primary School. She won a bursary which enabled her to proceed to Maruapula School, and went on to the University of Botswana, where she studied archaeology. Later she took her Ph.D. at Cambridge.
When Dr Segobye first studied archaeology at UB, the subject was then relatively little understood locally, but now has a much higher profile and is playing an important part in promoting awareness of African civilization and the African past. This award recognizes Dr Segobye's achievement in bringing about this development, as well as her extensive academic work.
The award was reported in Mmegi Monitor, 19-25 Feb. 2002, p. 4.
